FUGUE, working title
The show follows an African American woman who longs to be a classical music composer. Her childhood musical influences are Motown, jazz, rock-n-roll country and western and the blues. One day she is listening to the radio and hears a rock-n-roll version of a piece of music by JS Bach. She is determined to learn to play this piece of music on the piano. She falls passionately in love with Bach and his music. The study of his music turns out to be the catalyst for her hunger to discover a reflection of herself in the classical music world. She begins researching African Amercian Classical composers. Through this research she begins the journey of becoming a classical composer. The show follows her as she discovers her authentic musical voice which results in a musical composition which incorporates various musical genres and uses the Civil and Human Rights movements of the 1960's as a back drop for her work .
This musical play written in the format of the one person performance piece, utilizes the experience of the playwright as an actor and her work as a musician. The play will use archival photos, video footage, dance, live musicians and costuming to tell the story and enhance the production qualities of the show.
